An Isle of Wight councillor has thanked members of the emergency services who helped evacuate Bonchuch residents from their homes, after Sunday night’s devastating landslide.
Around 20 families had to move out of their Leeson Road properties, after a chunk of coastline dropped between 40 and 70 feet.

Councillor Rodney Downer, the Isle of Wight Councillor for Bonchurch, Lowtherville and Wroxall, has since visited the site and spoken with residents from the affected properties, as well as with council officers.
He said,
“My thoughts go out to all those affected by Sunday’s traumatic events.”

Ventnor Town Council shared the sentiment at its meeting last night (Monday), calling it a tragic 24 hours for the community and adding its heart is with those affected.
The council said it was a very serious and sad situation and it stands in solidarity with residents.
While Isle of Wight council and emergency crews had taken the lead after the collapse, Ventnor Town Council offered its services, help and support to those who need it.
Stay away from the site
Residents are asked to access their homes between 10am and 4pm, for short periods, to collect belongings.
The Isle of Wight council has strongly advised others to stay away from the area, saying the land is still moving.
Leeson Road will remain closed until it is safe to reopen.
