Their 3,000 mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean will not just be a test of physical endurance, but also a mission to carrying a crucial environmental message.

Highlighting ocean pollution
The primary goal of their challenge is to raise awareness of the detrimental effects of waste materials on ocean ecosystems.

The crew are passionate about drawing attention to the scourge of plastic pollution, amongst other non-decomposable materials, which are wreaking havoc on marine environments and threatening diverse aquatic life.

Championing Seagrass Conservation
As well as highlighting the issue of ocean pollution, the lads is also focusing on raising awareness about the importance of seagrass. This often overlooked marine plant plays a critical role in combating the climate crisis.

Seagrass beds are not only a haven for various sea creatures, but also act as significant carbon sinks, sequestering carbon 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. However, these vital ecosystems face threats from human activities, including anchoring and pollution.

Mermaid Atlantic’s environmental commitment
Driven by their deep connection to their Island home, the Mermaid Atlantic crew is using their oceanic adventure as a platform to promote environmental awareness and support.

They have set a fundraising target of £2,500 for each of their chosen charities, expressing gratitude for any donations that can be spared.

Supporting key charities
The funds raised will benefit three vital environmental organizations: Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, The Seahorse Trust, and Surfers Against Sewage.

Each charity plays a significant role in protecting and preserving the natural world, aligning closely with the team’s passion for environmental conservation.

So far they have raised just under £1,000 – if you are able to support them in any way, pop over to the GiveWheel fundraising page.
