If you’ve ever been to Boojum and Snark in Sandown, or visited their current exhibition at Quay Arts, you may be interested to hear that they’ve been pivotal in the creation of one of the first commercially produced range of craft beers on the Isle of Wight.
Goddards Brewery are usually associated with cask and traditional beers, but working in collaboration with Boojum&Snark, they’ve created Brewed in the Bay, a range of craft beers for their new Branstone brewery and taproom which is due to open in April.
(Listen to our podcast with Goddards MD, Bob Simpson, to hear about their new home at Branstone)
The oldest and one of the youngest breweries
Goddards, established in 1993, is recognised as an industry leader when it comes to cask ale. They have won numerous awards over the years.
Boojum&Snark on the other hand are newcomers to the sector. Founded by Julie Jones-Evans and Tracy Mikich, they opened in 2019 with a small 1 BBL brewery on site and during the last two years they have produced a range of interesting and original beers, attracting the attention of the real ale legends.
Simpson: Really impressed with what Boojum&Snark have achieved
Bob Simpson, Goddards MD said,
“We have been really impressed with what Boojum&Snark have achieved in a short space of time, especially during the pandemic, and approached Julie and Tracy to work with our brewer Josh Davies to develop a range of craft beer for our new brewery.
“The new beers have Goddards’ mastery at heart, but are distinctly modern in taste and style.”
Brewed in the Bay Range
There are currently three beers in the Brewed in the Bay range. Barista Breakfast Stout is a super creamy oatmeal coffee stout that features a warming spice blend and vanilla.
South Island Pale Ale is a hop-forward beer that showcases antipodean hops Vic Secret and Nelson Sauvin and is finished with cryo citra, the label, designed by BrightBulb features Culver Cliff.
Riptide Red IPA is a stunning orange-burnished colour arising from the five malt mix, it’s dry-hopped with citra, simcoe and has a fantastic bitter marmalade vibe.
These will join Planet Lager, a Vienna style lager that is both gluten-free and vegan. The brewers behind the collaboration are Josh Davies from Goddards and Julie and Tracy from Boojum&Snark.
Davies: We’ve sparked off each other to create some highly original beers
Goddards brewer, Josh Davies, said,
“I’m a very curious and creative brewer so having the opportunity to pilot new recipes and get feedback from the customers at Boojum&Snark has been a great opportunity.
“Working with Julie and Tracy has been very exciting. Together we have sparked off each other to create some highly original beers all brewed in the bay!”
Mikich: Putting the Isle of Wight on the map for modern craft beer
Tracy Mikich, Boojum&Snark said,
“The Brewed in the Bay range puts the Isle of Wight on the map for modern craft beer.
“Imagine how great it would be if every pub, bar and restaurant stocked the range it would help establish the Island as both a craft beer and traditional ale destination.”
