Thanks to Suzanne and Alan for their report on the latest action in the Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup. Ed
For the competitors in this year’s Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup there was a chance to rest, soak up the sun and see HM The Queen and Prince Philip on Wednesday before they got down to race in Race Four of the championship.
All concerned with the Brewin Dolphin event knew of the royal visit to Cowes and with the royal party going into Cowes Yacht Haven just where the 21 boats are berthed there had to be a few changes.
One race in the afternoon
Racing Instructions were changed and instead of the planned start time a later start saw the boats on their way.
Only one race was held in the afternoon along the Lee-on-Solent shoreline as it was on the first day. With a 6 – 9 knot southeasterly there was enough wind for the boats to race.
Heading out into the tide to round the first mark the boats were soon heading back downwind. Later the wind changed to a southwesterly but with a shortened course the boats were able to reach the finish line.
Young British Keelboat Academy crew winners of the day
Winner of the day was the young British Keelboat Academy crew on former RORC Commodore David Aisher’s J/109 Yeoman of Wight competing in RYA Team GBR Black, whose corrected time left them more than two minutes ahead of John van der Starre’s J/111 Xcentric Ripper in the Benelux team.
However it was RYA Team GBR Red which put in the best performance of the day slipping into first place on 151.5 points and putting them just three points ahead of the French Team.
After four races Yeoman of Wight and her young crew is the leading boat across all seven teams at the Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup, having taken over from RYA Team GBR Red’s small boat, CNBC, which had a bad day for Race 4.
