The Falkland Islands Government has taken significant steps to modernise its aviation services by signing a Letter of Intent with Isle of Wight based-Britten-Norman for the purchase of four new BN2B-26 Islander aircraft.
The total cost of the planned order is valued at $9.75 million.
Modernising the fleet
This project forms part of a broader initiative to upgrade the Falkland Islands Government Aviation Service (FIGAS) as it celebrates 75 years of service. FIGAS, which has been operating since 1948, provides essential connectivity for the Falklands and its remote communities. The new aircraft will join an existing order of two Islanders that Britten-Norman is already constructing, with the first now in active service.
Britten-Norman will deliver the new aircraft from its manufacturing line based on the Isle of Wight. The company re-established this production facility in late 2023.
Vital role of FIGAS
The existing FIGAS fleet, comprising five Islanders, serves a wide range of critical roles. These include commuter flights, air ambulance services, postal deliveries, freight transport, veterinary missions and environmental monitoring. Scenic flights have also become an increasingly popular addition to the service.
The BN2B-26 Islander, known for its rugged design, has proved essential in supporting FIGAS. The aircraft’s exceptional Short Take-off and Landing (STOL) capability makes it suitable for the varied terrain and challenging weather conditions in the Falklands.
Aircraft selection and upgrades
FIGAS chose the new Islanders to replace its older fleet after assessing which aircraft could best meet the demands of flying in the Falklands’ unique environment. Key considerations included the aircraft’s durability and reliability. Recent updates and enhancements to the Islander model also influenced the decision.
The order holds significance for Britten-Norman as well. The company, marking its 70th anniversary, is in the process of expanding its UK manufacturing output. The production rate is set to grow fourfold over the next two to three years. This growth aligns with Britten-Norman’s plans to reinvest in continuous improvement and product development through its ‘Green Futures Initiative’, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the environmental profile of its aircraft.
A strong partnership
William Hynett, Chief Executive at Britten-Norman, emphasised the importance of the long-standing relationship with FIGAS.
He said,
“We are so pleased to have such an incredible opportunity to build a new chapter in our long-standing relationship with the Falkland Islands Government and to continue to support the communities of these important islands.”
Mr Hynett highlighted the value of public and private sector collaboration, noting that FIGAS is one of Britten-Norman’s most valued long-term partners. He stated,
“Our relationship with FIGAS is an exemplar of the benefits that can be achieved in private/public sector co-operation.”
He also pointed out that crucial feedback from FIGAS has been instrumental in refining the company’s products and services.
Looking ahead
The addition of the new aircraft will enhance the capacity and capability of FIGAS, ensuring that the Falkland Islands remain connected and well-served as they look to the future.
For Britten-Norman, the partnership reinforces its commitment to delivering high-quality, durable aircraft tailored to meet regional needs while progressing towards sustainable aviation solutions.
