Bruno Bek, a beloved resident at the Briars Care Home in Sandown, turned 100 years young on 5th September, and was luckily able to celebrate the momentous occasion with his family and friends.
Many people have celebrated ‘big’ birthdays whilst under lockdown restrictions, but thankfully, Bruno’s centenary celebration has come at a time when restrictions are easing, and Bruno’s family were therefore able to take him out to celebrate the big day.
Royal birthday celebration
The Bek family took Bruno to Sandown’s Royal Pier Hotel, where they celebrated with a lovely meal, and a tipple or two!
The day was made extra special as the family were allowed to be together, when for a long time it was quite uncertain whether they would be able to celebrate Bruno’s birthday all together as a family.
Two celebrations
On Bruno’s return to the Briars, he celebrated with his fellow residents and staff, and the catering team made him a special birthday cake.
As is tradition, a telegram from Her Majesty the Queen was delivered to the home in honour of Bruno’s 100th birthday, which he was extremely proud to receive. Interestingly, when Bruno was born, Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather, King George V, was on the throne!
Bruno: Just to take each day as it comes
Living to one hundred is certainly something we all aspire to, and Bruno has given us some advice on how to get there ourselves. Luckily, it’s very simple:
“The secret to turning one hundred is just to take each day as it comes.”
Preece: An honour to be a part of such a monumental celebration
Cath Preece, deputy manager at the Briars, said of Bruno’s big day,
“It really is an honour to be a part of such a monumental celebration. When our residents celebrate a birthday, we try to make it as special for them as we would our own family.
“It was lovely to see all of our colleagues and residents joining in with the party.”
