Budget Cuts: Wight Bus Proposed To Stop, But Some Funding Available

More proposals for budget cuts, this time hitting WightBus.

Budget Cuts: Wight Bus Proposed To Stop, But Some Funding AvailableWe have just seen the full Isle of Wight council cut proposals which have just been outlined in preparation of the December Cabinet Meeting.

Here’s what they say about Public transport …

The Council currently runs Wight Bus and subsidises rural bus services to a level beyond that of the previous government grant level.

It is proposed to cease Wight Bus as from 31 August 2011 (saving £75,000 in 2011/12 and £150,000 in a full year).

However, the Council will continue to invest funds in supporting the provision of services where the commercial operator may not provide.

This is despite the withdrawal of the Government grant and their expectation that bus operators will continue to fund non-economic routes as result of the financial benefit they receive from the concessionary fares scheme.
