Carisbrooke Castle Museum has launched a GoFundMe appeal to raise £2,500 for the restoration of two portraits in its collection.
The paintings show the museum’s founder, Princess Beatrice, and her husband, Prince Henry of Battenberg. Both need restoring, the museum says.
It hopes to raise enough to pay a trained conservator to do the work.
Founded in memory of Prince Henry
Princess Beatrice set up Carisbrooke Castle Museum in 1898 as a memorial to her husband.
Prince Henry had died of malaria two years earlier, after joining the Ashanti expedition in West Africa.
She succeeded him as Governor of the Isle of Wight and held the post until her death in 1944.
A trust that relies on donations
The museum runs as an independent charitable trust and depends on donations.
English Heritage looks after the main castle itself, but the museum inside it raises its own money.
The trust is asking the public to give whatever they can. Large gifts or small. If the appeal reaches its target, the museum hopes to have a conservator working on both portraits this winter.
