Chicago Rock In Newport Closes

… but drinkers Island-wide stay calm … another bar is opening in its place.

Well known Newport venue Chicago Rock has closed down. Rumours of it closing have been circulating over the last few days.

Chicago Rock In Newport ClosesDropping by there today, we saw the venue in a sorry-state being stripped out.

All the pictures from the walls had come down, the sign had been removed from the front and contractors where there removing other items from the inside – strangely bottles of drink still stood on the bar.

We understand that it will be turned into a Lloyds No.1 Bar (Web site pretty non-functional) operated by Wetherspoons and is due to open in November 2009.

More details when we get them.

It’s been closed a while from what I’ve heard. I know that their last ‘alternative’ night was Thursday 17th Sept. I understood that was its last week of operation but could be wrong. I’ve not noticed either way to be honest.

Wetherspoons have a licence application in thats under consultation and due to end 10th November, so would expect it to open nearer December.

It looks like another licence application is in to turn The Studio, Newport, into a strip club called “Club Phoenix”! Hope that doesn’t mean another venue stopping live music -sigh.

Ah, just checked plans, and it’s the British Legion turning into Club Phoenix, not The Studio – my bad!
