The dates revealed for next year’s Isle of Wight Festival, 19th to the 22nd June, have caused concern for those organising Round the Island Race.
The concern arises because Round the Island Race takes place the same weekend, and could lead to serious issues for emergency services.
Organisers for Round the Island posted the following on their social media page,
Many of you will have seen the announcement of the 2025 Isle of Wight Festival dates, which coincide with the scheduled date for the 2025 Round the Island Race of 21st June.
Regrettably, despite publishing our date three years ago and receiving assurances from the local authorities that an early announcement would guarantee no clash with the Festival, this conflict of dates between two major Island events has been permitted, with no prior warning. While we will obviously seek an explanation, the situation is unlikely to change, given that Festival tickets are already on sale.
Running both events on the same day presents significant challenges for agency support, safety, transportation, accommodation and volunteer availability. Equally, changing the date of our race is not straightforward, with the attendant implications for the sailing calendar of Solent based clubs and organisations, accommodation bookings and crew commitments.
At this time, we are considering all options and will communicate any decision regarding the Race as soon as possible.
OnTheWight has been in touch with Isle of Wight council to find out how the the two events could have been approved for the same weekend.
A spokesperson for the council told OnTheWight,
“Events on the Island are independently run, and it is organisers responsibility for setting dates.
“The Isle of Wight has an extensive calendar of events throughout the year, offering a variety of activities for residents and visitors. With a busy summer schedule, inevitably some will occur at the same time.
“All major events are subject to pre-planning with the relevant authorities including the Isle of Wight Council and Category One support agencies such as Police and Fire Services. This is through the Safety Advisory Group, who are well experienced in working with and supporting an extensive events programme to ensure the safe running of these events.”
