Around half of Britain’s small businesses claim that employment regulations put them off employing staff.
At a time of high unemployment it’s particularly important that small businesses and new start-up businesses have the confidence to create jobs without fear of falling foul of the regulations further down the line.
Changes to dismissal process
In March, the Government launched a ‘call for evidence’ on simplifying the dismissal process for the smallest businesses in the country, those which have fewer than 10 employees.
The consultation is about how the dismissal system works for the small business and whether changes are needed to the current dismissal code to make it easier to use and more accessible to the smaller business.
The Australian Small Business Fair Dismissal Code is a simple one page document and, if there is a good response to this consultation, it is possible the UK could move to a similar model.
Must encourage more jobs on the Island
The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner commented, “As Member of Parliament for an area with a greater concentration of smaller businesses than most, I am very glad the Government is looking at ways to help small businesses create jobs. Small companies rarely have the benefit of an HR department and current employment regulations can be complex and difficult to navigate.
“We must continue to protect employees from unfair practices, but it is important that we do all we can to encourage the creation of more jobs on the Island.
“Busy businessmen may find it difficult to find the time to respond to the consultation, but for the Government to be able to take their needs into account they do need to hear from them – so I encourage Island business owners to take the time to give their views.”
