The Freddy’s Mission Facebook page was set up to raise awareness for a newborn cooling technique, after it was used to save the life of young Islander, Freddy.
Cool To Save A Life was set up by Freddy’s parents, Nicky Symmonds and Daniel Cooke. They say, “Our son received the pioneering new cooling technique for babies when he was oxygen deprived for 20 minutes at birth. He is now healthy with no signs of brain damage.”
The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the treatment and help make sure it becomes available in every hospital in the UK.
An online Petition has been set up to gather signatures in support of more Government funding into The cooling Technique for Newborns who have suffered from Oxygen Deprivation.
Also involved in the campaign to raise awareness and funds to help purchase equipment for NICUs are Sharon Burns; Tami Jenkins; Kelsie Marchant; Sarah Adams; Kim Toplass and Kerry Robertson.
Awareness event this weekend
This weekend sees an awareness and fundraising event take place in Newport.
It takes place on Saturday between 11am until 4pm with activities taking place at both The William Coppin and Pizza Hut (both on Coppins Bridge, Newport).
The day of fun for all the family is in aid of raising funds for Southampton Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to purchase a Cerebral Function Monitor.
This monitor is a vital piece of equipment used when cooling a newborn baby with Asphyxia. Many Island babies who are in need of the pioneering cooling technique are transferred to Southampton.
See Events On The Wight for full details of Saturday’s event.
