Council Responds To Library Legal Action

Following yesterday’s news that solicitors, Leigh Day & Co are pursuing legal action against the Isle of Wight council over library closures, we got in touch with the council for a response.

Legal papersIan Anderson Director for Community Wellbeing and Social Care for Isle of Wight Council said “I can confirm the council is now in receipt of new documentation and will be considering its response to it over the coming days.

“We are not prepared to make detailed comment at this stage other than to reaffirm that our position remains that the council considers that its decision on the future of the library service meets the statutory duty to provide a comprehensive and efficient library service and we are delighted by the responses that we are receiving from members of the community coming forward to be part of delivering the new community libraries.”

Ian wins the award for the longest sentence we’ve seen today.

Yes, a long sentence and while he manages to work in ‘community’ (twice) the other critical part of his responsibilities ‘Wellbeing and Social Care’ were conspicuous by their absence.

Seeing a sentence of that length without any punctuation, backs up the need for a good education system on the Isle of Wight.

Yet again we have to tolerate this arrogant view from IOWC that the libraries being saved by voluntary groups form part of their Library Service. This is just not the case. The only reason these volunteer groups have been formed is that otherwise their library would have been closed by the Isle of Wight Council. The voluntary groups have to fund the cost of running a public… Read more »

Yet another overpaid director making anouncements on behalf of the bunch. Why do we have to be told this information by the Director for Community Wellbeing and Social Care when the library issue has nothing to do with his department. Couldn’t Pugh or the appropriate Councillor have responded to the question of legal action? It’s ridiculous.

“we are delighted by the responses that we are receiving from members of the community coming forward to be part of delivering the new community libraries” Confirmation, if needed, that those that volunteer to help in the libraries are bolstering the Council’s ability to make cuts. Surely it shows that No volunteers=Council has to continue providing library services locally. Good luck to those bravely challenging these unpopular… Read more »

You hit the nail on the head – if no one volunteers to take over the running of libraries the council will be forced to continue the running of this statutory service.

Sorry Kiethybaby, but you are in denial. The IOWC would undoubtedly have closed the 5 libraries.

I’m certainly not in denial, just believe that it’s worth fighting to the finish – just look what’s happened to News International and how the tide can change!

My reading of the situation is that the Council is acting unlawfully, and the Judicial Review will decide on that, so there is still all to fight for.

As Gloucesteshire now has a Judicial Review in September and cannot close any of the 10 libraries earmarked for the ‘chop’ before this date and Brent Council has a hearing later this month we should all keep fighting and give Dave Quigley and his team all the support we can muster

If the libraries threatened with closure are kept open, cuts will definately have to be made elsewhere in the service. Very likely more job losses & altogether poorer service.

Good, that’s what we have been calling for from the start – get rid of Steve Beynon £149k, Dave Burbage £167k, Jay Jayasundra £145k, Davina Fiore £100k. This is PUBLIC MONEY that these people are lining their pockets with.

Mr D, yes you are probably right but from the beginning the Junta at County Hall were offered 3 alternative budgets, 2 of which were fully viable and would have saved all of the libraries, public toilets and TICs, and with NO JOB LOSSES. They were also offered two specific library alternatives. Being totally determined to cut public services (an inbuilt part of the Tory makeup) they… Read more »

ian anderson is involved in this one as he believes that care homes (residential, nursing or whatever) should optomise their service and open up any spare rooms for libraries, he has even stated that the iowcc will supply all needed to stock the ‘library’ within the care home, hmmmm what immediately sprung to my mind when this suggestion came out, albeit a few months ago in my… Read more »

I cant see the problem of shutting something which isn’t used. Go into any island library it will be empty bar a couple of old people waiting for a bus… asleep. Yes, and why do I need to bother to vote when someone else can just take all the decisions and flout the conventions of democracy? It’s called responsibility, not just for ourselves, but for the children that use the libraries, for those who do not have ready access to books or the internet. Closure of libraries will increase the divide between those who have and those who… Read more »

By closing libraries, local shops and cutting public transport etc, many Island communities will dissapear in the future and become places for the second homes of the mega-rich and big property developers. Is this the type of Island you wish to see?

As someone supporting one of the library groups, I have every sympathy with Janet’s view. The group with which I am associated is well aware of the importance of professional library staff, and sees the volunteers, some of which are now being trained, as support rather than replacements. From what I can see, they all value the expertise and professionalism of the full-time library staff and deplore… Read more »

Well said Keithybaby. I went into Bembridge Library yesterday and didn’t see anyone asleep it was buzzing. The computer room was in use not only by the silver surfers but by foreign workers from a nearby hotel e-mailing home. There were people selecting books, others picking up information and some reading the dailies. It was a real hub of activity. I would go so far as saying… Read more »

But the leadership of this council is determined to push through their plans whatever, and if we don’t try to co-operate they WILL close libraries, irrespective of the damage that they… Read more »

A very small percentage actually use the libraries in comparative population terms. A few I wants isnt good enough in Austerity times. They are surplus to requirement in this digital information age. Fairly simple concept really.

Ignore the thousands….yes, thousands of Island school children who participate in the summer reading event each year. You should take a look at the statistics before passing judgement. Has Niyam ever visited any Village libraries? Ours, in Brighstone, was always a hub of activity with an experienced librarian who was much loved by the village school children. She has now gone and unless the legal action is successful I do not think our library can survive. As for wanting volunteers – I consider it to be immoral to replace paid workers with volunteers

Mmm, not sure Bembridge is an ideal location for a TIC. They would be better sited in the ferry port towns. Problem is now that Yarmouth and Ryde TICs have now been ‘disposed of’, it would be no difficult to implement such an idea. For example; Ryde library again is not an ideal location for a TIC. The TIC issue was very short-sighted by the council. The… Read more »

You obviously don’t know Bembridge well Sailor Sam. Most people getting off ferries do so in cars and then go on to their destination, they do not stop immediately to go to TIC’s. Bembridge has a harbour, a large Warners Hotel, Whitecliff Bay etc. During peak seasona these three locations can have in excess of 6000 people staying. Warners is open throughout the year and there are… Read more »
