Students and staff at Cowes Enterprise College are celebrating today with their best A level results yet, and in addition are going on to some of the UK’s best higher education institutions.
Over the past year, the school which is sponsored by Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT) has worked with OAT’s ‘Access Champion’, Simon Pedley to develop a strategy overhauling provision for high achieving students. The Access Champion initiative began after the Trust noticed that not enough students with the potential were going on to the very best universities.
As part of his work, Simon delivered talks to students on Oxbridge and Russell Group applications, and has worked with staff to develop a long-term strategy to help students fulfil their potential in higher education.
Three Cowes students who are celebrating exceptional results and going on to some of the best universities include:
- Aaron Wheeldon, whose target was ABB, achieved AAB and is going to study International Relations at Southampton – a prestigious Russell Group university.
- Lea Nieuwoudt has achieved AAA for English Language, English Lit and Art and will be studying Illustration at Falmouth.
- Niall Casson has achieved two distinctions in Business and will be studying Business Management at Royal Holloway.
Overall, the school achieved an Average Point Score (APS) per entry of 218 for A levels – their best ever result. Furthermore, the APS for vocational qualifications rose a staggering 25 points to 249.
Principal of Cowes Enterprise College, John Peckham, said:
“We are proud of students’ results and are pleased to be making good progress at Cowes thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff and the senior team.”
“We wish students the best of luck as they go on to start their careers or begin the next phase of their education.”
Chief Executive of Ormiston Academies Trust, Toby Salt, said:
“It is our absolute priority as a Trust to ensure every student fulfils their potential, and key to this is raising students aspirations.”
“We are thrilled that a number of students are going on to top universities and that Cowes is continuing to make steady progress.”
