Cowes Enterprise College earns Rainbow Flag Award for LGBT+ inclusivity

Cowes Enterprise College, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, has received national recognition for its commitment to LGBT+ inclusion and visibility with the prestigious Rainbow Flag Award.

The award, developed by The Proud Trust in collaboration with trusted LGBT+ youth organisations including Allsorts Youth Project, The Kite Trust, and Humankind Charity, is awarded to schools that demonstrate a strong dedication to promoting positive LGBT+ inclusion across all aspects of school life.

Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
Through the award, Cowes Enterprise College has been recognised for its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion as part of the curriculum and through the school’s daily practices.

The academy’s inclusive curriculum educates about different types of phobias, celebrates LGBT+ role models, and fosters open discussions on supporting the LGBT+ community, as part of a whole-school approach to LGBT+ inclusion and the development of effective strategies to combat LGBTphobic bullying and discrimination.

A welcoming environment for LGBT+ people
Students at the school play an active role in creating a welcoming environment for LGBT+ people, including being supported to advocate for their peers and celebrate their identities within the community, particularly during Pride. As part of this, Cowes Enterprise College students and staff took part in this year’s Isle of Wight Pride Parade, proudly supporting both the Isle of Wight’s LGBT+ community.

The school’s Pride Committee also meets regularly, providing students with the chance to directly contribute to improving inclusion. Initiatives include a student-led Pride Club, student-run assemblies, and resources created by students for their peers.

A culture of inclusion
The award recognises the ongoing opportunities at the school to grow a culture of inclusion, as part of Cowes Enterprise College’s mission to educate students for life, ensuring that everyone feels valued, respected, and able to thrive in a supportive and inclusive environment.
