Cowes RNLI lifeboat aids yachtsman after vessel runs aground near Newtown

A 26 foot yacht with one man aboard that had fouled its propeller and gone aground on the shore between Thorness and Newtown Creek late last night (Sunday) led to Cowes RNLI lifeboat launching to provide assistance.

The lifeboat, which launched at 8.22pm, discovered the yacht off Burntwood, and the yachtsman had by then already freed the propeller by diving into the water.

Two lifeboat crew members went aboard to help take down the sails; Escorted by the lifeboat, the yacht – then refloating – proceeded on to a Shalfleet mooring in Newtown Creek. Members of Needles Coastguards also attended the incident.

The lifeboat eventually returned to its Cowes station at 11pm.
