The RNLI had an unmistakable presence at the bicentennial celebrations of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, in which royalty from across Europe took part in a review of more than 180 members’ boats.
The local lifeboat, the Atlantic 85 ‘Sheena Louise’, was invited to participate as a marshal boat and to demonstrate the presence of the life-saving charity in the town.
The local lifeboat’s link with British royalty began in 2012 when its new station was officially opened by the Queen, patron of the RNLI. The Queen had never before opened an RNLI lifeboat station.
The Squadron fleet was reviewed by the Duke of Edinburgh. He was accompanied by King Harald of Norway, the former King of Spain, King Carlos, King Constantine II of Greece, Prince Albert of Monaco and Prince Henrik of Denmark.
The British representatives also included Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, and Prince Michael of Kent.
