Creative young minds shine in Sight for Wight’s design competition

Sight for Wight is thrilled to announce the winners of their “Design Your Own Hat and Sunglasses” competition, inviting school children from across the Isle of Wight to showcase their creativity and design skills. This exciting competition was aimed to inspire young minds to think outside the box and create their very own unique sunglasses and hat designs.

It was launched as part of Sight for Wight’s annual Hat and Sunglasses Day which was held on mid-summer solstice starting with Isle of Wight Primary School’s playing the Charity’s “Be Wise Protect Your Eyes video”.

This video features the four Characters; Swoop, Digger, Salty and Bounce who teach children the importance of looking after their eyes and the simple steps they can take to help prevent avoidable sight loss.

Hollyhead: 48% of Sight Loss is avoidable
Lisa Hollyhead CEO of Sight for Wight said:

”A staggering 48% of Sight Loss is avoidable; that means one in two people living with sight loss may have been prevented.

“I am absolutely passionate about teaching children the simple steps they can take to do this and our Annual Hat and Sunglasses Day is one of the ways we do this.

“We also offer a free ‘Be Wise Protect Your Eyes’ Education Program to all Primary Schools for both Key Stage one and Key Stage two, here on the Island.”

Mystery judges
The competition winners were chosen by our mystery judges, and we are delighted to announce the winners; all of whom received a personal T shirt showing their winning designs.

Mystery judge one said,

“This competition is a fantastic opportunity for children to express their artistic talents and gain recognition for their creativity. It also encourages them to think about the practical aspects of design and how their ideas can be transformed into real products.”
