Thanks to Graeme for this latest report from Ventnor Cricket Club. Ed
Ventnor began their Southern Electric Premier Division campaign with a seven wicket defeat against a powerful Havant side at Newclose on Saturday.
Mark Holmes’ side were asked to bat first and found the going tough against a visitors’ attack strengthened by the inclusion of South African paceman Brad Wheal.
Australian under-19 international, Sean Willis, impressed on his Ventnor debut, hitting an impressive 72, but with James Cheek (14) the only other home team player to reach double figures, the Islanders crashed to 126 all out.
An opening partnership of 74 between Hopson (42) and Walker (24) set up Havant for a convincing victory, Rob Snell picking up 2-22 for Ventnor.
Fixtures
Ventnor travel to St Cross in the Premier Division on Saturday and then entertain Lymington at Steephill on Sunday at 1pm in the second round of the Royal London Club Championship.
