Critical CQC report leads to new procedures at The Gouldings

At next week’s Health and Community Wellbeing Scrutiny Panel, members will be receiving an update on standards at the council’s Freshwater residential care home, The Gouldings.

An inspection was carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in May 2012 and found that the care home failed in three areas.

They found that the home was not meeting the following standards; ‘People should get safe and appropriate care that meets their needs and supports their rights’; ‘People should be given the medicines they need when they need them, and in a safe way’; and ‘The service should have quality checking systems to manage risks and assure the health, welfare and safety of people who receive care’.

Treated with respect, staff ‘very good’
However, speaking to residents, the investigators also reported, “People told us that they were treated with respect and that the staff were ‘very good and always there to help'”.

Family members visiting during the inspection, “confirmed that their relatives were supported by staff to receive the care they needed and they were satisfied with the care.”

New procedures in place
Following the outcome of the investigation, a report being presented to the Scrutiny Panel next week confirms that new procedures have been put into place to ensure that the care home is now fully compliant with the requirements of the CQC.
