Crowdfunding campaign aims high

An online fundraising campaign is giving Islanders the chance to get involved and turn the idea of a purpose built indoor climbing wall in Freshwater, into a reality.

West Wight Sports & Community Centre are aiming to raise £20,000 through Crowdfunding, a scheme whereby people can make pledges to a project in return for a reward.

Clare Griffin, Centre Manager, explains,

“Our new climbing wall is going to be a fantastic new addition to the Centre and one which can be enjoyed by the whole community. We chose Crowdfunder to raise the money, as it’s a perfect fit.

“It enables the community to become part of the project through the rewards we can give them as a thank you for supporting us.”

‘Wall of Supporters’
Everyone who pledges will be featured on the ‘Wall of Supporters’ displayed in the Centre café, and receive an invitation to the official opening ceremony.

Plus there are a range of other rewards depending on the level of your pledge, including vouchers for climbing sessions, gold memberships to the Sports Centre, and private climbing sessions for groups.

£20,000 in eight weeks
Clare says,

“So far we have raised £13,000 through the 3 Peaks Challenge which saw a group of staff, centre users, families and friends attempt to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours last summer.

“The Crowdfunder campaign runs for just eight weeks, so we need everyone to spread the word and tell all their friends and family about it. And of course, make a pledge!

“It’s 40 years ago this April since work started on the first swimming pool. It only happened because the community came together. We hope we can recapture that community spirit in 2017 with our climbing wall project.”
