Whilst we’re on the subject of running, thanks to Nicky for this news from The Ellen MacArthur Trust, in her own words. Ed
Runners in the Bupa Great South Run will be set on their way by one of the most famous British sportswoman in recent history, as Dame Ellen Macarthur, the record breaking single-handed round the world yachtswoman, is to perform the starter’s duties.
Dame Ellen, who broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005, retired from professional sailing in September last year, said, “I am really excited to be starting the Bupa Great South Run – it’s a hugely popular event. My charity, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has 50 runners raising funds for us so we can take more young people sailing in recovery from Cancer.”
Running since 1990
The Bupa Great South Run, which was first staged back in 1990, will take place on October 30 this year and has established itself as one of the most popular and prestigious road races in Europe.
This year a record 24,000 entrants have been accepted. On the preceding day a new event, the Bupa Great South Run 5k has been added to the calendar alongside the traditional junior and mini runs for children.
David Hart, Communications Director of Nova, the event organisers, said, “It’s a real honour for everyone involved in the event for Dame Ellen to agree to be our official starter this year, and I’m sure she will provide extra motivation to the thousands of runners as they cross the start line in October.”
