The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, has expressed concern that in redevelopment plans for East and West Cowes the need for access to deep water for existing businesses must be considered.
He fears that if such access is lost it could result in job losses with a number of successful Island companies being left with no alternative other than to leave the Island.
Mr Turner said:
“Deep water access, which is vital for a number of Island based marine companies must be protected when looking at East Cowes Regeneration. There are planning applications currently going through the consultation process, for two such sites, Venture Quays and Trinity Wharf in East Cowes. There are also plans being considered to develop Medina Yard in Cowes. The Council has assured me that this is an issue that will be taken into account, but Islanders have only a short time to make their views on this known. The consultation closes on 9th October.
“We must make sure that companies that rely on deep water access are not forced to leave the Island with the resultant loss of jobs. It is absolutely crucial the planning authorities look very carefully at this situation.”
A public meeting is being held on Friday 2nd October at East Cowes Town Hall at 7pm to discuss the applications.
