Monkton Arts is a community-centred cafe and arts centre based in the Monkton Village area of Ryde. The arts centre recently hosted the inaugural ‘Monkton Arts Awards Ceremony’ spanning five different award categories for various community achievements.
Dawn Fidler co-founder of Monkton Arts opened the ceremony by noting how the confounding link between the awards was that all the winners were ‘Doers!’ Papa Owl Awards and Little Owl Awards (courtesy of Mayor Michael Lilley) are awards for ordinary people who have done extraordinary things.
Ordinary Islanders who do extraordinary things
As already reported by News OnTheWight, Steve Double picked up this award for his work on the Operation Geranium project, working with Age UK, Care in the Garden and many local artists to help isolated people during the Coronavirus pandemic lockdowns.
Little Owl Award
Ruby Reed-Mackay aged 13 collected the Little Owl Award for being a wonderful advocate for neurodiversity and overcoming her life struggles which still supporting others.
John Ackroyd Young Engineer of the Year
Next was the newly launched John Ackroyd Young Engineer of the Year Award, (designed and made by Chris Horne) with a personal letter to the winner Louise Timony from Richard Noble (the fastest man in the world).
Monkton Arts Children’s Prize
Then came the Monkton Arts Children’s Prize (with art material prizes sponsored by Ryde School and Sara K Arts Awards sponsored by the Sara K Gallery, Monkton Arts).
Monkton Medals
Lastly came the Monkton Medals, honouring community members who have helped the centre and its surrounding community to thrive since its inception in July 2019.
The event was attended by the award winners and their families.
