Volunteer with Blue Lamp Trust: Help combat cybercrime on the Isle of Wight

The Blue Lamp Trust has a service looking at protecting older Isle of Wight residents from cybercrime.

The aim of the role is to raise awareness about basic IT security and how to avoid being affected by a cyber crime or a cyber enabled crime.

Call for volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to cover the Isle of Wight with the aim of starting the service later this year.

The sort of areas to be covered are:

  • Introduction—What is Cyber Crime?
  • Can criminals buy my online identity www.haveibeenpwned.com
  • Creating and Storing Passwords
  • Password Hygiene
  • Privacy—Social Media
  • Protection—Anti-Virus
  • Public Wi-Fi
  • How to Report Issues
  • How to Recognise Scam / Phishing E-Mails/Texts

Ability to empathise with the client
As important as having an interest in IT ( you will receive training) is an ability to empathise with the client and to be able to explain the subject in an easy to understand way, with no jargon or difficult to understand terms.

You will visit the client in their own home, and talk to them about cyber security and cyber enabled fraud. You may also be asked to give talks and presentations about the work of the Cyber Bobby Scheme and computer security to relevant community groups. You will be able to claim travel expenses.

Minimum of four hours per week
In terms of how much time commitment we would look for a minimum of four hours per week.

There will be an informal interview, but any volunteer position will only be confirmed once you have had a police vetting check ( if you do not currently have one).

Apply today
If you are interested in this new role please send your current CV and a covering letter on why you are interested in the role to [email protected] by 20th September 2023
