Dozens more e-scooter and e-bike parking bays approved across the Isle of Wight

Dozens of e-scooter and bike share parking bays have been installed across the Isle of Wight amid a continued drive towards micromobility and sustainable transport.

New bays in Cowes, Ryde and Newport support County Hall’s aims to increase transit choices for residents and visitors as well as its climate change and net zero objectives, according to a report from senior council officer Scott Headey.

Mr Headey approved the continued operation of 24 parking sites which received no objections and have already been installed, including Stag Lane near Newport, Vectis Road Bus Stop in East Cowes, Fishbourne Lane Bus Stop in Fishbourne and Newport Business Park roundabout in Newport.

Approved despite objections
He also greenlighted parking in locations where objections were received but were considered suitable following officer review, including Kite Hill in Wootton Bridge, and Egypt Point and Elm Grove in Cowes.

His report said the new bays will improve access to micromobility services in areas that are currently underserved. It said,

“The council has undertaken a detailed review of all consultation responses received.

“While several concerns were raised regarding safety, accessibility, visual amenity, antisocial behaviour and proximity to existing bays, officers have found that the majority of objections can be mitigated through site design, operational management and ongoing monitoring by Voi.”

Six years of shared scooters on the Island
The Isle of Wight has hosted a rental e-scooter trial since November 2020 and a bike share scheme since October 2022, both run by Beryl to begin with.

Voi took over the micromobility contract in July 2024 for an initial two-year term. It is managed by Solent Transport as part of the wider Solent micromobility scheme.

The contract was recently extended for another one year and 11 months to 31st May 2028.

Why dedicated bays matter
A key requirement of the scheme is the provision of dedicated parking locations where rental e-scooters and e-bikes must be collected and returned.

The report says these help to maintain high levels of parking compliance, reduce street clutter and support the safe operation of the service.
