Eight members sought for new UNESCO Biosphere Steering Committee

Eight new committee members are being sought by the Isle of Wight Council for the new UNESCO Biosphere Steering Committee, which is due to meet for the first time in November.

The new members will play a vital role in helping to shape the future of sustainable development on the Island.

As part of the committee, members’ roles will be to steer and advise the council in the development of its policies, strategies and decision-making, not only giving due regard to UNESCO’s internationally recognised Biosphere Reserve ‘badge’ of sustainability, but looking to sustain and enhance it too.

Bacon: An important part of the journey
Cllr Jonathan Bacon, Cabinet member for environment, heritage and waste, said,

“The new committee is an important step forward and we hope to have representatives from across the Island who are experts in, or passionate about, all the relevant sectors join us. The group will be independently chaired and its work will both steer the council and inform activity across the Island to support a sustainable future.

“This committee is an important part of the journey that will allow us to work towards protecting our Island, for future generations.”

“If this sounds like something you are passionate about and are interested in being involved in, we look forward to hearing from you.”

Dix: Steering Committee will have an important role
Natasha Dix, strategic manager for environment, added,

“The Biosphere Steering Committee will have an important role in working closely with the new Mission Zero Community Hub (MZCH) — an Island-wide partnership that will work towards the Island’s net zero emissions targets.

“It is not only important for the council to work towards our aspirations in making the Island a sustainable place to live and work, but also to support and work with our town and parish councils, partners and community, in helping them achieve this too.”

Passionate about the biosphere
Successful candidates will be passionate about the Island’s natural environment, culture, and heritage and be able to contribute their time, knowledge and experience to help create a future aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
