The Isle of Wight firefighters on an exchange trip to the US have had to put their new skills into practice this week to help tackle a massive blaze in Oregon.
Six pumps attended the fire during the middle of the night as a fire engulfed the Island Learning Centre. Broadlea Primary is unaffected and open for the last day of term.
The Cabinet approve the plans to be part of a combined fire authority with Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton. The final decision will rest with the Home Secretary, and not expected to be made until the autumn.
As well as a recommendation to give the PCC voting rights on the IW Fire & Rescue Authority, another to be considered is to look into joining the existing Combined Fire Authority (CFA) arrangements for Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton.
Views were divided at last night's council meeting where councillors voted in favour of merging the Isle of Wight Authority with Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton, with one councillor stating the FBU only supporting it as the "least worst evil".
