Environment Agency are taking over Ventnor Exchange for three days

Last updated:

The Environment Agency is taking over Ventnor Exchange for three days next month to run public exhibitions and interactive activities related to the Ventnor Coastal Erosion project.

Residents and visitors are invited to learn more about the Ventnor Coastal Defence Scheme and how the Environment Agency is working to safeguard homes, businesses, and the coastline for years to come.

A collaborative approach to coastal protection
As as been reported by OnTheWight in recent years, the Environment Agency is working in partnership with the Isle of Wight council, with expert support from JBA Consulting and VolkerStevin, to explore a sustainable future for the coastal frontages of Ventnor and Bonchurch.

Both areas are particularly vulnerable to coastal erosion and landslides due to their geological makeup and topography.

The Undercliff: A complex landscape
Ventnor and its surrounding villages sit on ‘the Undercliff’, one of the largest urbanised landslide complexes in north-west Europe.

This deep-seated coastal landslide formation began around 10,000 years ago due to rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age.

Over time, geological movements in the area have ranged from slow, continuous shifts to sudden, large-scale events that have caused significant damage to infrastructure and properties.

The exhibition is free to attend, and each visitor will receive a complimentary hot or cold drink.

Where and when
The public exhibition takes place at Ventnor Exchange on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 1st April: 2pm – 7pm
  • Wednesday 2nd April: 12pm – 7pm
  • Thursday 3rd April: 9:30am – 1:30pm
