It may be bright and sunny today with barely a cloud in the sky, but overnight on Sunday to Monday the Environment agency are forecasting a lot of rain.
They have issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.
It reads:
The water level in the Eastern Yar is higher than normal. In the last 5 days more than a month’s rain (72mm) has been recorded at Wroxall. Until 12:00 today (Saturday 28/09/2024), at Sandown, minor impact flooding could affect Golf Links and Moreton Common Road. Property flooding is not expected.
Today (Saturday 28/09/2024), the weather will remain dry, and water levels will lower at Sandown by early afternoon.
On Sunday (29/09/2024) and Monday (30/09/2024), further heavy rain is forecast with up to 40mm expected. If this volume of rain does affect the river, then there will be much more widespread impacts to low lying land, footpaths, cycle tracks and roads in both the upper and lower river.
We have checked that the Bembridge sluice is operating normally. We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages.
Please ensure that any products used to protect gardens or property from flooding can operate if required over the next 2 to 3 days.
