EU regulation forces new measures for disabled ferry passengers

This in from Wightlink, in their own words, Ed

Wightlink has introduced new measures to support disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility. New EU Passenger Rights Regulation, which took effect from 18 December, places new obligations on companies to support disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility.

Reduced Mobility Places will be allocated on each sailing
In order to ensure the safety of all passengers, especially in the event of an evacuation, Wightlink will individually assess the needs of all disabled passengers. Those who need assistance onboard, would require extra support in an evacuation, or need an over-sized parking space onboard, will be allocated a ‘Reduced Mobility Place’. Four Reduced Mobility Places will be available for pre-booking on each sailing.

Wightlink launches freephone Reduced Mobility Helpline
All bookings for disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility will now be made through the Wightlink Reduced Mobility Helpline – 0800 093 8236. The freephone service, which will be for the exclusive use of these customers, will operate 0700-2100 (Monday to Saturday) and 0730-2000 (Sunday).

Disabled passengers should book ahead
In order to receive support, disabled passengers should book and request assistance at least 48 hours before travel. Wightlink will do its best to support customers who do not book ahead but, because an assessment of their needs will need to be made in-port, their departure may be delayed.

Blue Badge holders
Blue Badge holders who do not require assistance or an over-sized parking space will continue to be able to book online.

Disabled passengers will continue to receive discounts
All disabled passengers will continue to be eligible for discounted travel with Wightlink. In addition, where the company requires a disabled passenger to bring a companion to care for them during the sailing, no charge will be made for the companion’s travel.

Consultation
The company is grateful for the advice it has received from the Portsmouth Disability Forum and ‘Johns Club Isle of Wight’ in developing its policies.
