Explore the history and future of the International Space Station with Keith Townsend

The Vectis Astronomical Society will be hosting an online talk (Zoom) by Keith Townsend, FRAS at the end of the month titled, The International Space Station.

Twenty-four years and counting, the ISS has provided answers to myriad questions and yielded scientific benefits for all.

What went into the planning and development in the decades before construction and what is life like on board for the crew, who eat 14 tonnes of food in six months! Indeed, what is the future for this huge project as it nears a quarter of a century in space?

This talk will reveal fascinating details and stunning images from this exciting orbital science laboratory.

About the speaker
Keith Townsend has been a keen astronomer for 25 years. His interest in imaging in the 2000s followed the development of new technologies. He now uses the amazing Altair Astro 102mm ED Triplet refractor mounted on an iOptron iEQ45 Pro mount.

His self-contained imaging ‘rig’ allows him to control everything through a MiniX computer via the internet, “whilst I sit in the warm sipping wine!” Some of his deep sky images can be seen on his excellent website.

He is a member of Peterborough Astronomical Society with whom (in collaboration with the BBC) he first presented talks. He is committed to promoting interest in astronomical science to the general public, through talks and online activity.

About the host
The Vectis Astronomical Society meets on the 4th Friday of every month, except for December.

The talks are open for non-members to attend. We have a suggested donation of £2.50 for non-members of VAS.
