Fancy some action at the Poultry ‘Box Show’?

Thanks to Jan for sharing news of Jed’s latest venture. Ed

Jed Dwight is well known on the Island for his knowledge of Poultry, and has, since a young age, been involved in a number of events to promote his hobby, as well as starting his own stand-alone event, the Poultry Open Day, which takes place each August.

Jed will also be putting together a competition of poultry at this year’s County Show in June, and will again be helping to put on an exhibition at the New Forest Show in July, which last year claimed the President’s Cup.

The Box Show
His most recent venture however is a ‘Box Show’ which is being held at the Porchfield Village Hall this coming Friday (21st March), starting at 6:30pm.

When asked what it involves, Jed said,

“It is different to your usual poultry show; participants simply turn up on the evening with their exhibits (a maximum of five), each is given a raffle ticket, and then these tickets are all put into a hat together.

“To start two numbers are pulled out, these birds are brought up to the front of the hall and each put into a pen. The judge, Rob Whittington, will then choose his favourite of the two, the winner will remain in the pen, the loser returns to its box, and another number is called and another bird comes to the front of the hall, and so it goes on.

“The two birds left in the pens after all of the numbers have been called being named the Best & Reserve. We hope that this will prove to be a great social event, with refreshments on offer, as well as a chance for beginners to learn about what our hobby involves.”

Guest editor for Fancy Fowl Magazine
As we have mentioned previously, Jed has not shied away from getting involved in the fancy not just on the Island, but nationally, which sees him travelling all over the UK and further, attending shows either to exhibit, judge or photograph the winners.

This has meant that he has been invaluable to national poultry magazines, in particular Fancy Fowl, for whom Jed has written a number of articles, and, whilst the magazine’s editor, Grant Brereton, has been out in the US for a poultry conference, seen him take on the role for the April edition of the magazine.

Jed, now a panel B judge aged 22, said,

“I have always taken a great interest in the media industry, and wrote my first article for the magazine when aged just 16. This relationship has grown over the years, and I feel very privileged to have been asked to take on the role as editor for the month, although I am glad to now be in a position to look forward to the summer events.”
