Thanks to Clare from West Wight Sports Centre for details of this great challenge taking place next month. In her own words. Ed
The biggest ever Cross Solent Swim takes place on Thursday September 8th when 50 swimmers will be leaving Hurst Castle at 0730 and heading for Colwell Bay on The Isle of Wight.
The ‘Wild West Solent Swim’ has been organised by West Wight Sports Centre Trust – the charity that runs West Wight Sports Centre in Freshwater.
Under threat after funding cuts
The future of the community sports centre is under threat because of possible reductions in local government funding.
Trustees and staff have organised the swim to raise badly needed funds for the charity as well as setting their users a fitness challenge.
The 50 swimmers have been training both in the pool at the Centre and on the beaches around the West Wight.
They will be accompanied by 30 kayakers, a number of ribs and safety boats as well as both the Freshwater Lifeboat vessels. All-in-all it will be quite a spectacle and never before have so many people crossed in one go.
