Five Years Ago, This Is How The Council Were Planning To Spend Our Money

As we mentioned at the weekend, five years ago we covered our first council meeting ‘live’ whilst councillors were considering the annual budget proposals (which they’re also doing tonight).

Andy SuttonYou know what it’s like, time goes past, other news stories grab everyone’s attention and it’s very easy for us all to forget what has happened in the past.

We thought it would be interesting to read back through what the Conservative administration, then led by Cllr Andy Sutton, were planning to spend council tax payer money on, way back in 2007.

These days they looks like quite large numbers. Here’s a selection …

  • £1m to be spent on seven public toilets.
  • £750k – 11 new town centre managers. To ensure town is well looked after. In place by end of May.
  • £900k extra to be spent on speed monitoring signs and speeding reduction campaigns.
  • New parking attendants starting 2 April. £500k announced last years in signs, etc. £430k extra this years.
  • £500k on new Street Furniture – Bay Area, West Wight, East Cowes (“my birthday present”, East Cowes councillor)
  • £200k on Dog fouling – public disgust. Zero tolerance.
  • Extra £50k to make One Island magazine monthly.

Below are the official minutes of the 2007 meeting, embedded for your convenience.
