Around thirty young people, predominantly in the Sandown area, have been struck by food poisoning caused by the Campylobacter bacteria.
It’s being investigated by the Isle of Wight council and the Health Protection Agency.
Information was disclosed at the Full council meeting on Wednesday and the CP have reported it online today.
Local schools
VB asked the council which of the local schoolS are most of the students at. They replied that “no one school was significantly more affected than others.”
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said “As is common in these instances, we have not yet been able to ascertain the origin of this outbreak with certainty and our investigation continues with the HPA.
“We have evidence to suggest that there have not been any more cases associated with this outbreak. We have taken a number of precautionary steps and will continue to regularly monitor the situation.”
What is Campylobacter?
A quick glance at the Health Protection Agency Website tells us that
Campylobacter, is the most common cause of food poisoning in Britain. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pains and cramps, fever, and generally feeling unwell.
People are usually infected after eating contaminated food. The bacteria is found mostly on raw poultry and is common in raw meat.
