Fort Victoria:A major scheme to restore and improve facilities at Fort Victoria will get underway later this year.

The council has secured £187,000 of Heritage Lottery Funding towards the project which will see the walls and roof of the building repaired and restored as well as a number of other improvements.

These include better signage and information for visitors plus refurbishing the toilets.

Works starts late spring
The undercover area used by schools and groups will also be upgraded and the paths and steps around the park will be improved. The works will also see one of the guns mounted on a replica carriage in a restored gun emplacement known as a casemate.

Works are scheduled to get underway later in the spring, with the main roof and walk restoration to begin in the first week of June.

The whole scheme, which is being led by the West Wight Landscape Partnership, is due to be completed by end of November. Fort Victoria will remain open to visitors throughout the works.
