Give your bike a second life in Africa – donate it to Re~Cycle: Bikes to Africa

Do you have an unwanted adult bike sitting in your garage?

Bring it to a bike drop off from 10-12.30pm on Sunday 2nd April at Gift to Nature, Shide Meadows Centre PO30 1HR (behind National tyres).

Bicycles donated to Re~Cycle: Bikes to Africa are shipped to Africa where using a bicycle can make education, work and health care more accessible.

Bailey: Doesn’t matter if it is a little rusty or has flat tyres
Sue Bailey, who co ordinates the collection of unwanted bikes on the Isle of Wight said,

“It doesn’t matter if it is a little rusty or has flat tyres – so long as it is not totally seized up, we can use it.

“However, unfortunately, the charity cannot take dual suspension bikes, nor children’s bikes.”

Support from Bartletts
Suitable bikes are taken to Re~Cycle’s national headquarters in Colchester before being shipped to one of four countries in Africa.

Bartletts donate the use of a Luton Van, and Wightlink provides a complimentary ferry crossing.

Gift to Nature stepped up
Sue continued,

“For some months we have been looking for somewhere to store donated bikes on the Island.

“We are delighted that Gift to Nature have been able to give us the use of a garage and we can begin collecting unwanted bikes again.”

More than 130,000 bikes shipped to Africa
Re~Cycle:Bikes to Africa has been collecting bikes for many years. Since the charity started in 1998, over 130,000 bikes have been shipped to Africa.

Sue took over the voluntary role nearly ten years ago after untimely death of Tony Harding who set up the Isle of Wight collection point.

Volunteer sought
Sue is looking for someone to take over the co ordination role.
