This weekend see a programme of art, media and photography with a focus on the plight of the ever decreasing environment for wild animals, from the lions of Southern Africa to the local Isle of Wight wildlife.
Organised by David Oates from the As Wild As Charity (what’s this?), the free events aim to provide an opportunity for Islanders to learn more about wildlife conservation and the work needed.
Wildlife exhibition
An exhibition of natural art, photography and sculptures from local artists of both local and African wildlife is on display at the Ku Gallery on Church Street, Ventnor today (Friday) and Saturday.
Local artist, Gianpaolo Mario, said,
“The sea is never the same on any two days which is what makes photographing seascapes so interesting. Whether enjoying glorious sunshine, getting soaking wet, freezing cold or a mixture of the above, one thing I love is being outdoors taking photos.”
The exhibition takes place between 10am-4pm today and tomorrow.
Film screening
On Saturday afternoon (3.30pm) Ventnor Arts Club will be hosting the UK screening of Blood Lions.
Every single day in South Africa at least two to three captive bred or tame lions are being killed in canned hunts. And hundreds more are slaughtered annually for the lion bone trade. The Blood Lions story is a compelling call to action to have these practices stopped.
Entry to ‘Blood Lions’ is by ticket only. Tickets can be obtained from Ku Gallery or email [email protected]
As Wild As
As Wild As is a UK not-for-profit organisation supporting lion and wildlife conservation in Africa and animal welfare causes in the UK, formed in November 2014.
Inspiration is drawn from volunteer and bush experiences, as well as the fight to keep the ever-reducing wild environment for the creatures and nature that exist there.
