Some great news in from our friends over at Goodleaf Tree Climbing who are doing their bit to help protect the beautiful red squirrel on the Wight.
They have joined forces with the Wight Squirrel Project to ensure that red squirrels on the outskirts of Ryde are being fed on a regular basis.
Abigail from Goodleaf tells us that Russell Page had fed the squirrels since 1996 when the rope crossing across Calthorpe Road, Pondwell was put up, but has had to recently relinquish his duties due to injury.
Spotting an article on the gardening pages of the County Press looking for volunteers, Goodleaf has taken responsibility for filling the food hoppers at the squirrels rope run for the last few months.
Using specialist tree climbing equipment, Paul McCathie, proprietor of Goodleaf Tree Climbing fills the special food hoppers with peanuts every 3 weeks. He has yet to see a squirrel waiting for its dinner, but the hoppers are always empty so the squirrels are obviously enjoying their regular nutty feasts.
