Habitual Newport shoplifter jailed for multiple retail theft offences

Neighbourhood teams continue to target habitual shoplifters and support businesses across the Island affected by retail crime. Following recent efforts, we have some good news to share about a recent suspect who has been sent to prison. 

Raymond Skelly, aged 45, appeared at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 1st August where he pleaded guilty to the following offences:

  • Theft of £37 worth of alcohol from Sainsbury’s in Newport on 26th June.
  • Theft of £300 worth of food, drink, laundry and electrical items from B&M in Newport on 6th July.
  • Theft of £152 worth of food, drink and clothes from Sainsbury’s in Newport on 6th July.
  • Theft of £158.99 worth of clothing from Sports Direct in Newport on 10th July.
  • Theft of a drill worth £49.99 from B&M in Newport on 30th July.
  • Theft of £274.93 worth of goods from B&M in Newport on 30th July.

Skelly, of Culver Parade in Sandown, was subsequently jailed for 20 weeks.

He has also been ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge, and £85 in costs.
