Hambrough loses Robert Thompson replacement (updated)

Following the sudden departure of Robert Thompson from the Hambrough Group in April, and the subsequent fanfare that John Campbell would be taking the helm, news reaches OnTheWight today that Chef JC will no longer be ‘acquiring’ The Hambrough Group portfolio.

The former two-Michelin-starred chef told Caterer and Hotelkeeper:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to undertake, but after careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that I am unable to dedicate the necessary time and commitment required for such a project due to professional and family commitments.

“I have therefore decided not to proceed with the negotiations, but I wish the Hambrough Group every success with this exciting project.”

Unanswered questions by The Hambrough Group
OnTheWight posed several questions to The Hambrough Group over the last two weeks in relation to John Campbell and the future of the Winter Gardens, but at time of publishing, they have failed to respond.

Updated 10.50am
We’ve now had an update from The Hambrough Group. They say The Hambrough Group “remains fully committed to The Winter Gardens Project”, but fail to answer other questions posed.

They confirm John Campbell is withdrawing from the deal and go on to say,

The new Chef Patron of The Hambrough will be announced next week, but the Group has announced today the new Chef Patron of its second restaurant, The Pond Cafe.

Chris Denney, who has attained extensive Michelin experience at a number of establishments, including Piaaza Duomo, Nahm in Bangkok, Hambleton Hall, Coworth Park, and Viajante will be re-opening The Pond next week. He takes on board Joe Gould, previously of Coworth Park, as his Senior Sous.

This is a great shame. Having a Michelin-starred restaurant in town has been great for Ventnor.

I do hope that the owner can find a suitable replacement and fast!

Yes this confirms my commnents (and Steephill Jacks) on another thread yesterday – what is going on re the Winter Gardens? – we are about to hit high season again and the building is a disgrace – hardly the great investment that was originally promised by this Summer !?! And for the Hamborough Group to not give any comments/assurances does make you wonder what is going on… Read more »

Looks like someone involved is coming on and marking down comments. How petty.

It was me as I don’t consider a Michelin starred restaurant is great for the tow but I’m certainly not involved with them, perish the thought

How ridiculous to suggest that having a Michelin starred restaurant is ‘not good’ for the town. It has been very successful in attracting visitors to Ventnor who might not come here otherwise.

Do you even live in Ventnor?

In not looking for an argument with you thank you, I have my opinions as you have yours. I was merely correcting the spurious allegation that somebody involved was being petty.

“Do you even live in Ventnor?”

Well if I don’t live in Ventnor I must therefore be a visitor and contrary to your statement the restaurant is in fact putting me off .

Eh? You wouldn’t come to Ventnor because it one of its restaurants has a Michelin Star?

Probably best for us all that you do stay away then ;-)

I didn’t wish to go into the reasons it puts me off as that would sidetrack this thread. But the type of people who frequent such restaurants is one of the reasons. No great loss me avoiding Ventnor as per your wish though because the drunks put me off too.

The owner, Kevin Sussmilch, needs to start answering some questions about the Winter Gardens.

He’s left it rotting away for so long that it is now an even bigger eyesore than when it was open.

I’d like to know what are the island council doing about this?

Why do they think a chef is best placed to be pushing the redevelopment of the Winter Gardens? Why is Sussmilsh, as owner, not getting the work done by a proper Project Manager. Chefs cook food. Sussmilsh is clever in having [part of comment removed by moderator] the IOWC and the Ventnor Council for 3 years and now he needs to act, or leave the town’s iconic building… Read more »

Probably (and this is of course just speculation) that the public are endeared toward chefs more than they are toward plain old suited businessmen. The Chef Patron in this case would appear to be a public figurehead for the business. I would guess at it being a situation of “Here is our plan; if you like it you can come on board and you can throw your… Read more »

This lack of response from the Hamborough owners over the Winter Gardens really takes the biscuit.

We want to know when work is due to start, they’ve been promising it for months.

They should be totally ashamed of themselves leaving it to rot as they have done.

Shame about losing the replacement chef but regarding the Winter Gardens, I was told by a councillor (during the electioneering) that the deal had fallen through yet again. Can’t say if it is true, but a lack of information has been the hallmark of all parties dealing with our winter gardens! Perhaps Hamborough group are struggling like many others at the moment. I certainly wouldn’t hold my… Read more »

Perhaps Robert Thompson will return. It will be all sorted then!

Has the Bourgeoisie broth been taken off the boil, it’s a pity the unwashed won’t get to witness the spectacle of gastronomic wizardry being performed on their ‘can’t cook won’t cook’ goody bags delivered by the Foodbank. The tourists may well of flocked to witness such an extravaganza being performed for them behind the glass frontage. Perhaps it would make a wonderful community hub for cultural and… Read more »

Some key questions I would like answered: 1. How much is the property worth, with planning permission and what was it valued at on sale? It’s in the council’s interest to know the value as they have an overage clause – don’t they?? It was in the original tender documents. 2. Can the current owners sell the property as seen, with the benefit of planning permission to… Read more »

I have no doubt that the new Administration will now have access to all of the Contracts and Agreements signed off by George Brown and, hopefully, there may be ways of regaining ownership if, as I suspect, Mr Sussmilch doesn’t have the funds that he needs. But be under no illusion; the Winter gardens is deteriorating daily and, whatever happens, if it is to be resurrected in… Read more »

Unfortunately I foresee this carrying on for years like the Coconut Grove saga on the site of the old Town Hall in Albert Street or the restaurant built on the site of Honeythorne next to Tides cafe on the sea front which is a wreck to this day. This recession is not going to go away in the near future. The truly sad fact is that it… Read more »

Maybe the new owners have realised how unstable the site is?

A civil engineer friend of mine said it wouldn’t be possible to put any more weight loading on it than is currently there. Makes building anything a huge risk and very difficult (and likely expensive).

Maybe we aren’t the only ones who didn’t get full disclosure of the site details during the sale?

The sale happened after full geo surveys were completed and planning permission granted.

So what’s the excuse for work still not having started?
