Detective work by Hampshire Police Marine Unit has led to the arrest of a suspected murderer and foiled an attempt to smuggle 17 suspected illegal immigrants on Monday afternoon.
The unit were searching in the Solent for a missing person on Monday afternoon when they spotted a yacht they had suspicions about.
The Argus has reported today that the Hants Police Marine Unit weren’t able to board the yacht due to the weather conditions, but managed to find out that it was heading to Chichester Harbour and informed Sussex Police.
The 55 year old man was arrested on suspicion of a murder in Spain.
However, whilst on board, officers also found 17 Albanian nationals on board who they suspect are illegal immigrants.
They have been detained pending Home Office consideration of their cases.
