Help For (French) Heroes

Help For (French) Heroes Many thanks to friend and reader of VentnorBlog, Laurence Keynes, who sent in this light hearted piece about the One Island magazine. Ed

This week’s CP saw the latest issue of the Council’s fine publication ‘One Island’ hit the shelves. Nothing unusual about that until you reach page 9 and an article entitled ‘Reception to honour forces personnel’.

A nice piece about the Council proposing to host a reception to honour our boys’ brave efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but then take a look at the accompanying picture of one of our brave ‘boys’.

No doubt due to recent budget ‘cuts’ the Council has sadly dispensed with a picture researcher because the image used was a soldier but certainly not from the British Army.

After a bit of Googling and searching on Wikipedia the image turned out to be a paratrooper from the French Foreign Legion.

For you eagle eyed readers out there here’s a couple of tell tale signs that kind of gives it away; first the camouflage pattern used in the uniform, then the style of webbing, the fact he is clearly carrying an FAMAS assault rifle (very French), and finally a beret with a rather distinctive Legionnaires cap badge.

It is good to know that the Entente Cordial is still alive at County Hall.
