Henry Hector: Local yachting and powerboat legend passes away

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Henry Hector, a local legend, long-term resident of the Isle of Wight and former Harbour Master at Island Harbour. Henry passed away peacefully after a life full of adventure and meaningful involvement in the yachting community.

Born in Bow, East London, Henry became an entrepreneur with an international career. He began visiting the Isle of Wight as a young cyclist, and grew to become a historic figure in powerboat racing, notably as a Cowes-Torquay powerboat racing champion, and competed in the Round the Island and Round Britain races.

Island Harbour Marina
In the early 2000s, Henry played a key role in the acquisition of Island Harbour Marina, where he subsequently took up residence and formed many enduring friendships.

His contributions to the local community were numerous and impactful.

British Power Boating Club
Henry was a valued member of the Island’s British Power Boating Club (BPRC) and one of the early members of the Classic Power Boat Club.

His love for the water extended to yachting, where he enjoyed a vibrant life on the sea, spending much time on the Solent.

Henry often paid tribute to his late father, who served as a Naval Petty Officer during the Second World War. His father’s diary, detailing his journey to Normandy across the Solent on D-Day, has been featured on local television and in newspapers.

Enjoyed retirement years at St. Vincent’s
He was a devoted father and a loving husband to his late wife, Irene Hector.

The couple enjoyed their retirement years at St. Vincent’s in Ryde, surrounded by wonderful friends and a caring team.

Funeral service
A funeral service to honour Henry’s life will be held on the Isle of Wight on 5th July.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate the life of this remarkable man. For details regarding the funeral arrangements, please contact a member of the family.

He will be deeply missed
Henry was a characterful and charming man who always had a joke to tell. Many people who met Henry would not forget him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
