The historic Newport Rowing Club has embarked on a crucial mission to preserve a significant part of local heritage.
This week, the club has announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for their boathouse, which has been a stalwart presence on the river Medina since 1863.
Structural damage
The boathouse, with its unique positioning above tidal waters, is one of only two such structures across the United Kingdom.
Over the years, this unique location has unfortunately led to structural damage due to tides and high winds, causing an urgent need for significant repair works.
Crucial repairs and community contributions
To address the damage, the club is seeking a sum of £6,000 to carry out essential works.
These include steel underpinning to secure the boathouse, and repair works for the slipway which has seen rotting due to weather exposure.
Pledge from Sport England
Sport England, a national body for grassroots sport, has pledged to provide the remaining 40 per cent of funds should the Newport Rowing Club successfully raise 60 per cent of the target amount through their crowdfunding efforts.
This reflects Sport England’s commitment to encourage community sports clubs to foster strong links with local communities, and their belief in crowdfunding as a viable and community-driven fundraising method.
At least 50 donors needed
Newport Chairman, Julie Clarke, shared the importance of community participation. She stated that at least 50 donors are needed to activate the pledge from Sport England, and emphasised that donations could be as minimal as £5.
Every contribution, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.
Race to save the Boathouse
The rowing club is not just passively asking for donations. They have organised several fundraising events for this August, which include a virtual row around the Island.
Such initiatives provide an engaging way for community members to contribute towards saving the boathouse.
Preserving a cherished local landmark
The club is well aware of the boathouse’s value to the local community. The building is much loved by ramblers, photographers, artists, and local people.
Thus, the campaign isn’t just about preserving a functional facility, but also a cherished local landmark.

The club’s fundraising campaign is hosted on the Crowdfunder platform, and anyone wishing to contribute can visit their page.
Donations of raffle prizes
In addition to monetary contributions, the club is also inviting donations in the form of goods or services. These can serve as raffle prizes or rewards, providing further incentive for community participation.
