Hoegh Osaka: ‘Extraordinary dedication and courage’ shown

The stricken Hoegh Osaka cargo ship, which has been stranded in the Solent for three weeks, has finally moved to her now home, Berth 101 in Southampton Port.

Filled with 1,400 vehicles, the vessel took onboard over 3,000 tons of water after being purposely grounded on Bramble Bank. The decision by the pilot and captain potentially averted a major disaster after the vessel got into trouble and began listing in the Southampton channel on Saturday 3rd January.

Yesterday (Thursday), salvors were able to finally move her to Southampton,

Huge praise for all involved
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said:

“I congratulate all those who have worked tirelessly day and night to bring this ship back to port.

“I would like to pay particular tribute to Hugh Shaw who oversaw the operation, with the help of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, salvage operators, and the pilots and tugs of the port of Southampton.

“They battled exceptionally difficult weather conditions with extraordinary dedication and courage. A full investigation into how the incident occurred is ongoing.”

As far as we’re aware, there has been no pollution in the waters of the Solent. All involved should be congratulated on their efforts and professionalism.
