The quarter of a million pound target, announced at a special VIP event held on board Hovertravel’s hovercraft, will help raise vital funds for the team, who are dedicated to caring for and supporting people in the community who wish to remain in their homes at the end of their lives.
At the VIP event on Monday (16 February) guests, including some of those involved in the original event 25 years ago, heard how the Walk the Wight has gone from strength to strength over the years.
Jill George, Nurse Manager, Community and Hospital Palliative Care Team, said:
“It’s remarkable to think that in the first year of Walk the Wight, the target was to help raise enough funds for a scanner at the hospital. Some 25 years later, the event has helped raise more than £3 million for Earl Mountbatten Hospice’s work. Through the Hospice, our community team are able to reach out to people and support them to be in the place of their choice at the end of life.”
As well as 25 years of Walk the Wight, the event also marked Hovertravel’s 50th Anniversary.
