In case it had escaped your attention, today (Thursday) is World Book Day.
At a time when the Isle of Wight may be losing five of its libraries – under new plans, Bembridge, Brighstone, East Cowes, Niton and Shanklin are only receiving council funding until the end of June this year and Ventnor, Cowes, Freshwater and Sandown will be reduced to 21 hours a week – the celebration of books and reading is rather timely.
Celebrations around the Island
There’s going to be a celebration in Newport later today which we can’t reveal any more details on just yet (we’re bound by an embargo), but it looks like it should be quite interesting (more to come later).
Weekend celebrations for World Book Night
Also if you’re too busy to do anything today but are free on Saturday, why not pop along to Josiah Tempest in Ventnor from noon on Saturday where Bow Bowden will be giving away copies of The Spy Who Came In From the Cold by John Le Carre.
In addition, Paul Armfield, manager of Waterstones, will be holding a party in the Newport shop between 6-9pm on Saturday night to celebrate World Book Night where 36 people will be giving away a variety of books.
I started the day with a lie-in with my latest read, Lionel Shriver’s So Much For That, so far, a great read.
Whatever you read today, be it a classic, contemporary, non-fiction or even a comic book, celebrate the fact that you can and will!
