Queen Mark II and the Fort Walkers

Hundreds turned out for St Helens Fort walk

Hundreds of Islanders and visitors made their way to St Helens and Bembridge yesterday afternoon to take on the infamous St Helens Fort walk.

The walk is attempted by hundreds of people every year when the tide is at its lowest, although it wasn’t quite low enough yesterday for those taking part to remain completely dry.

Word of mouth
For safety reasons the Fort walk is never advertised and news of it spreads through word of mouth or more commonly these days, social media networks.

One half of the OnTheWight editorial team (Simon) took part whilst the other (me) watched from the beach, taking in the views and listening to the great hum of voices of those taking part.

Photos from the walk
Bembridge resident John Sparrow managed to capture some great shots of the walkers, who were treated to clear views of the Queen Mary II setting off on her latest voyage. Thanks to John for sharing his pics with OnTheWight readers.

I think Matthew’s hat is quite famous, actually!

I like Sally’s referring to ” …listening to the great hum of voices..”

Those sound-occasions can be very memorable, when happy and relaxed people get together away from the intrusion of engines, in natural surroundings. It’s nice when it’s noticed.

Being a “goose islander” I have done the walk many times, and this year was no exception. It was great to see so many people turn up this year. I still get asked the question by holiday makers, “what is going on, is it a Pagan ritual”?
That always brings a smile to my face :)

Next year I think it would be great if every walker gave the Coastguards £1. Or perhaps donations could go to the hospice?

Not more charity-commercialisation of a beautifully unorganised, informal and unbranded event?
